Chaplain - Full Biography
DARRELL earned his spurs in the music business in Texas during the early 1970’s, doing field promotion for Daily’s Distribution and ABC Dunhill Records. In 1973 he seized the opportunity to integrate his driving passions of music and Christian faith, by becoming National Promotion Director, for the fledgling Myrrh Records, the contemporary music division of Word Records.
In 1976, DARRELL founded Star Song, serving as its President and “chief product architect” for twenty years. During his stint with the company, DARRELL recruited and served as Executive Producer for numerous chart-topping artists in the contemporary Christian music field, including multiple recordings for Newsboys, Twila Paris, Gaithers and Petra. He was identified by Billboard Magazine as ‘the unofficial conscience of the industry.’
Towards the end of his Star Song years, he served as Executive Editor of “The Complete Library of Christian Worship” (Robert E. Webber, editor). Upon his retirement from Star Song in 1996, he was named President Emeritus of the label.
DARRELL was a licensed Southern Baptist preacher by the age of fifteen. He was ordained Elder at Church in the City Houston, Texas, in 1977, and has been active in ministry both formally and informally his entire life.
DARRELL served as the first Chaplain to the Gospel Music Association from 1997 to 2000, and has also served as Chaplain to Christian Artists’ Seminar in the Rockies, and Music Florida.
He is Dean of the Chapel at The Robert E. Webber Institute for Worship Studies (IWS) since its inception in 1999. IWS conferred the Doctor of Worship Studies Honoraria Degree upon him in 2002. He serves as Trustee to the Gospel Music Trust Fund and also pastors The Stonebridge Community, a house-church in Nashville, Tennessee.
DARRELL resides in Nashville with Janet, his wife of thirty-nine years.
