I just watched the movie 'Jumper' with my youngest son. Great film. It's basically about people who have the rather cool ability to teleport. However, it made me think of the role of the prayer minstrel/worship facilitator/hymn-song-writer. Somehow, the gift of the artist who assembles a structure of words and music, opens up portals for the rest of us. And we can jump through them, or we can just watch the world go by. I accompanied my Catholic father to midnight mass one Christmas Eve in Arundel Cathedral. I heard the choir sing, 'blessed is the fruit of thy womb', and I was deeply moved. They were praising Christ for entering our world - you could say he was the ultimate 'jumper'. This is the God we worship, who did not think of himself when he came looking for us. He just jumped.
