The rat in the aviary

It's happened again! I've been watching the hole getting bigger for several weeks now but had not seen any other evidence of the rat. Yesterday however I got home from work to hear that Caroline and Sarah had seen the creature running around in the aviary. From their descriptions I can only conclude that it is some hitherto unknown species of super rat and I may be able to make a name for myself by being the first to describe Rattus Timblissi to biological science. Reflecting later I decided that the description may have been slightly exaggerated. I am now left with the problem of trying to work out what to do about the animal. I am reluctant to use poison as I don't want the birds to get it and anyway I don't think it is particularly humane. A trap is out of the question as the birds have access to the area. Then a great idea occurred to me; grab the rat, dip its tail in glue and roll it around in a bag of fluff. It would of course then be a squirrel which is by definition cute and therefore not a problem!
It occurred to me that we often try to devise such imaginative solutions to try to convince ourselves that there isn’t a problem. We all like to see ourselves in a good light and hope that others will do the same. We try to minimise sin by redefining it. We try to compensate for wrongdoing by doing good things. The trouble is that whilst we might fool ourselves and other people, we won't fool God. The Bible says that all our righteousness are like filthy rags compared to God's perfect standard. None of us are able to live up to that standard. That's the bad news!
Fortunately there is also good news. The good news is that God loves us. He knows we can't make the grade on our own but he nevertheless created us to be in a relationship with Him, and wants that to happen so much that he sent Jesus to die for us to enable it to happen. For those of us who have put our trust in Jesus we have been charged with the task of making this love known to a dying world. How well are we doing?

Tim, get a meat pie and an air gun to deal with the rat. Apparently the dirty creatures like pies. So use that as bait, and when the little feller emerges for his king-sized snack, let him have it. I saw some blokes do this on telly, and it worked a treat.

Thank the Lord that we are worth more than many, many rats.
