through the looking-glass

I hung up a new mirror today. My wife and I have lived a long time without a mirror on our living room wall. It's a kind of British tradition (although in the north of England the tradition was to have a mirror by the hat, coat and umbrella stand in the hall). So sooner or later it was going to catch up with us.
Anyway, I've done it now. You wouldn't believe the sweat and tears (I hit my thumb with the hammer) it takes to put a couple of simple hooks on the wall. But then, the wonder of it all...the mirror hangs over the hearth, in all its glory.
I could appreciate the storyteller's fascination about mirrors - Alice being the archetypal mirror-traveller. It's a sneaky window into another world, where everything looks almost the same - except turned round a different way. A bit like the kingdom of heaven. We are in this realm, but not of it. We look like the beings who live here. Our homes look like their dwellings. But the value system has been turned round a different way (hopefully!).
And sometimes it will need polishing. More work!
