The jesus I know

The Jesus I know is strong and well read. He knows what’s going on and he gets it. He is not easily fooled and he knows where he was the day JFK was shot and when Princess Dianna died. He caught Martin Luther King in his arms on a balcony in Memphis and he sat behind Rosa Parks on a bus in Montgomery Alabama

He weeps with the mothers of aids victims and the children of drug addicts but he cry’s with those who are afflicted also. Somehow he manages to be on both sides at once and radiate compassion and mercy.

He ran up the steps of the twin towers with the New York firemen and held their hands as the masonry began to fall. He was in the planes that flew into them and was with the families of the guys who hijacked the planes when they discovered what their children were responsible for.

He’s sitting tonight on a hillside overlooking Palestine watching shells burst their devastation on a village where terrified babies and their mothers run for cover as the children of Israel carry out their retribution for the latest act of Hamass aggression. He’s crouching in the ruins of buildings with them as they find the bodies of their loved ones and he’s wailing the death prayers that reflect their agony.

And he’s standing tonight propped against a bar in a town on the west coast of Ireland. He’s watched the American tourists walk around taking pictures of the old country. He’s heard U2 on RTE radio and had the smell of fresh cut grass, slurry and the burning of peat embedded in his hair and clothes. He’s completely involved and completely at ease both at the same time.

The Jesus I know some how manages to be on both sides at once without choosing one at the expense of the other. He manages to laugh cry and dance and joke with every expression of human emotion. After all the Jesus I know is Emmanuel, God with us.
