Description
We were away on a church conference in Norfolk, and this passage had been chosen as the theme of the week.
Sandy Millar, in his opening address on the first evening, suggested that someone should again put this ancient early church hymn to music. After the meeting I went back to where Andy was staying, and we set about writing there and then. Three days later it was pretty much finished.
As you can no doubt understand, it was a very complex piece to put to music, because the English translation of the original text contains no rhyme scheme.
In my humble opinion, we have not quite captured the power of worship that this amazing gift of a song generates when played live with a full band, or even simply, with an acoustic guitar. None of the recorded versions have yet managed it, including the HTB live recorded version. I consider this recording to be a good song demo, and in the context of the album (Psalms, Hymns, and Spiritual Songs) it works well. But heavens, you have to experience it live. The 'To the glory...' end section just lifts the roof off the church.
One day, when Andy and I have some time free, I would love to try and capture the sound of some 1,000 people singing, full organ, rocking band and the wonderful spiritual power of singing a song which holds hands across 2,000 years of history, linking all those believing generations.
